Recitation by the follower during the Imam's loud recitation (Jahriyah).
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
The general rule is that recitation is not obligatory upon the follower for what the Imam recites aloud. This position is established by Imam Ahmad in the narrations transmitted by the majority, and it is the view of Al-Zuhri, Al-Thawri, Ibn Uyaynah, Malik, Abu Hanifah, and Ishaq. Evidence for this is found in the narration that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If I recite silently, then recite. This Hadith, narrated by Al-Tirmidhi and Al-Daraqutni, is interpreted to specifically address silent recitation. Furthermore, the general news implying recitation for all worshippers is restricted by the evidence pertaining to the loud recitation, suggesting that recitation is permissible or required only when the loud recitation is not occurring.

Al-Shafi'i and Dawud hold that recitation is obligatory based on the general command: There is no prayer for one who does not recite the Fatiha of the Book. They argue that the restriction only applies to the loud recitation where there is an instruction to be silent, leaving recitation obligatory in all other cases. However, the sound ruling relies on the Hadith: If you have an Imam, the Imam's recitation is your recitation, which covers both silent and loud recitation, meaning the Imam's recitation suffices for the follower.
