What is the recommended action for the Imam (and men praying behind him) immediately following the *Taslim* (salutation) in obligatory prayer?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
It is recommended that the Imam and the men praying behind him remain seated for a duration sufficient to ensure that the women have departed from their prayer spots. Umm Salama reported that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), the women would rise immediately after the obligatory prayer's *Taslim*, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the men praying would remain seated as long as Allah willed. Only when the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up would the men stand. Al-Zuhri suggested this was done so that the departing women would be distanced from the men. This practice prevents the mixing of men and women.
