What is the recommended action upon waking up after the prayer time has elapsed due to sleep while traveling?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
It is recommended for the traveler who wakes up after the prescribed time for prayer has passed due to sleep to move from that dwelling and perform the prayer in another location. Ahmad stated this based on the narration of Abu Hurayrah where the Prophet (peace be upon him) stated, 'This is a place where the Shaytan was present,' after they overslept the dawn prayer. The Prophet then performed ablution, prostrated twice (Sujud), and the Iqamah was called for the obligatory prayer (Fajr). A similar narration exists from Abu Qatadah and Imran bin Husayn, both agreed upon (Muttafaq 'alayh). Furthermore, it is recommended to make up the two rak'ahs of the Sunnah of Fajr before the obligatory prayer, based on the preceding hadith.
