Primary text

It is recommended for a man approaching prayer to do so with fear, reverence, humility, composure, and dignity. If the Iqamah (call to commence prayer) is heard, one should not hasten, based on the Hadith where the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'When you hear the Iqamah, walk with composure and dignity; pray what you catch up to, and complete what you miss.' Another Hadith confirms this, stating: 'Do not do so; when you come to prayer, maintain composure; pray what you catch up to, and complete what you miss.' Imam Ahmad stated there is no harm in hastening slightly if one hopes to catch the first Takbir, provided the haste is not grossly unbecoming, as narrations indicate the Companions sometimes hastened slightly if they feared missing the first Takbir.

Supporting text

It is recommended to shorten the steps to increase one's merits, as a merit is recorded for every step taken towards prayer, as related by Zayd ibn Thabit regarding the Prophet's action of shortening his steps.
