Primary text

It is recommended for the worshipper to direct their gaze toward the spot of prostration. Ahmad, in the narration of Hanbal, stated that humility (*Khushu'*) in prayer is achieved by fixing one's gaze on the place of prostration. This view is narrated from Muslim ibn Yasar and Qatada. A supporting narration is attributed to some Companions where the Prophet, peace be upon him, responded when asked where to place his sight in prayer, saying, "Your place of prostration." When the questioner stated this was difficult, the Prophet replied, "Then in the obligatory prayer, if so."

Supporting text

It is related that Shariq advised looking at the place of prostration while standing, at one's feet during bowing (*ruku'*), at one's nose during prostration (*sujud*), and at one's lap during the testimony (*tashahhud*).
