Primary text

It is recommended to recite Surah Al-Kafirun (Chapter 109) in the first rak'ah and Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112) in the second rak'ah. This practice is supported by the report from Abu Hurairah and the observation of Ibn Umar over a month concerning the Prophet's recitation in these two rak'ahs. This hadith has been classified as Hasan (good) by Al-Tirmidhi.

Alternatively, it is reported from Ibn Abbas that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, would recite the verse "Say: We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us" (Quran 2:136) from Al-Baqarah in the first rak'ah, and in the second rak'ah, he would recite "We believe in Allah and bear witness that we are Muslims" (Quran 3:52).
