Primary text

It is recommended to recite a Surah in the second Rak'ah that follows sequentially after the Surah recited in the first Rak'ah, according to the established order (*nuthm*), because this is what has been transmitted from the Prophet (peace be upon him). Ibn Mas'ud considered reversing the order, reciting a later Surah followed by an earlier one, as one with a 'reversed heart.' Abu Ubaydah interpreted this reversal as reciting a Surah and then reciting one that precedes it in the established order.

If recitation occurs in a manner contrary to the recommended sequence, there is no blame attached. Imam Ahmad stated when asked about this issue that there is no objection, asking if a child does not learn in this manner. In another narration, Imam Ahmad stated that his preference is to recite from Al-Baqarah downwards. It is also reported that Al-Ahnaf recited Surah Al-Kahf in the first Rak'ah and Surah Yusuf in the second, and Al-Bukhari used this as evidence that the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed Fajr with Umar reciting these two Surahs.
