Primary text

It is desirable to complete a recitation of the Quran every seven days, achieving one completion per week. Abdullah ibn Ahmad reported that his father, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, used to complete the Quran during the day in seven days, reading seven portions daily without fail. This is based on the narration where the Prophet, peace be upon him, instructed Abdullah ibn Amr: "Read the Quran in seven (days), and do not exceed that." Furthermore, the Companions of the Messenger of Allah divided the Quran into portions for recitation, specifying divisions of three, five, seven, eleven, thirteen, and the Musaffah alone.

Supporting text

It is disliked to postpone the completion of the Quran beyond forty days because the Prophet, peace be upon him, progressively advised Abdullah ibn Amr to read it in shorter periods, eventually settling on seven days, with seven being the minimum recommended period not to be surpassed.
