Primary text

It is recommended that the followers do not rise before the Imam, lest they make a prostration of forgetfulness (*Sujud as-Sahw*) when the Imam remembers something that necessitates it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded: 'I am your Imam, so do not precede me in bowing, prostrating, standing up, or departing.'

Supporting text

If the Imam deviates from the Sunnah by prolonging his sitting while facing the Qibla or by turning away, it is permissible for the follower to rise and leave him.
