Chapter on Adhan

Primary text

It is recommended that the caller uses deliberation and calmness (Tarsil) when reciting the Adhan, and speed (Hadr) when reciting the Iqamah. This is established by the Prophet's command: "When you call the Adhan, be deliberate, and when you establish the Iqamah, be swift." Deliberation in the Adhan is superior for informing those absent, while swiftness in the Iqamah is suitable for informing those already present.

Some linguistic scholars, citing Al-Nakh'i, maintain that neither the Adhan nor the Iqamah should have their grammatical endings (I'rab) fully articulated, suggesting a fixed, uninflected recital.
