What is the requirement for facing the Ka'bah during prayer?

Facing the Qibla is a necessary condition for the validity of prayer, applying equally to obligatory (Fard) and supererogatory (Nafl) prayers, just as purification and covering the body are required for both. This is evidenced by the verse: 'And wherever you are, turn your face toward it [the Ka'bah]' (Quran 2:144), which is general for both types of prayer.
