What are the requirements for prayer when on a riding animal in a spacious enclosure (like a 'Amariyah) allowing movement?

Chapter on Facing the Qiblah

Book of Prayer

Book 3 · Issue 1 · Bab 4

Open in Qurani

Primary text

If a person is on a riding animal in a spacious enclosure, capable of facing the Qiblah, performing bowing (Ruku'), and prostration (Sujud), facing the Qiblah is obligatory for the prayer. Prostration must be performed upon what the person is resting on, if possible, similar to a passenger on a ship. If the person can face the Qiblah but cannot perform bowing and prostration normally, they must face the Qiblah and indicate these actions through non-verbal signs (Ishara). This ruling is explicitly stated.

Abu al-Hasan al-Amidi suggested that none of these obligations might be required, analogizing it to other dispensations like shortening and combining prayers, as the general concession covers both difficult and easy situations.
