Primary text

If a person raises their head from Ruku' and then remembers they omitted the glorification in Ruku', they must not return to Ruku', regardless of whether they remember before or after fully standing upright (I'tidal). This is because the requirement for that Ruku' is fulfilled by raising from it, and returning would constitute adding an extra, illegitimate Ruku', which invalidates the prayer if done intentionally. If done out of ignorance or forgetfulness, the prayer is not invalidated, and the person performs the prostration of forgetfulness (Sujud al-Sahw). If a follower (Ma'mum) catches the Imam in this subsequent, non-prescribed Ruku', the follower does not attain that unit (Rak'ah) because this extra Ruku' is not prescribed for them, and they missed the essential Ruku' of the unit.
