What is the ruling on abandoning a previously established voluntary act of worship?

Abandoning a previously established act of worship is discouraged. Abdullah ibn Amr reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, warned him saying, 'Do not be like so-and-so; he used to perform the night prayer, then he abandoned the night prayer.' This warning is established by consensus (Muttafaqun 'alayh).
