What is the ruling on calling the Adhan from one's own house?
Chapter on Adhan
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
If the Mu'adhin calls the Adhan from his house and the house is near the mosque, it is permissible. This is because the near call is considered as if it were from the mosque, ensuring those who hear it attend. It is narrated regarding one who calls the Adhan from his house when the path to the mosque is audible to people that there is hope that it is not a problem. Bilal used to call the Adhan from the roof of a woman from the Quraysh tribe because it was high and near the mosque.
Supporting text
If the house is far from the mosque, it is not permissible because those who hear it might be misled, assuming the main call is near, and proceed to that location, causing them to miss the actual mosque. A narration from Ibrahim al-Harbi states strong disapproval for one calling the Adhan from his rooftop when distant from the mosque, and this ruling is understood to apply to the distant case due to the confusion it causes.
