Primary text

The 'Umm Walad' is treated like a female slave regarding her prayer and covering requirements. It is disliked for her to pray uncovered, but her prayer is deemed sufficient if she does so. This is stated by Al-Khiraqi concerning the freeing of mothers of children.

Al-Nakhai, Malik, Al-Shafi'i, and Abu Thawr did not mandate head covering for her. Ahmad bin Hanbal, as narrated by Al-Athram, stated she must cover her hair and feet because she cannot be sold, meaning she prays like a free woman. This statement is interpreted by some as an indication of recommendability (Istihbab), aligning with Al-Khiraqi, or possibly as an indication of obligation due to her unalienable status resembling a free woman. The former view—that she remains subject to the ruling of slaves except concerning ownership transfer—is preferred, making covering merely recommended due to her resemblance to free women.
