What is the ruling on following the report of a trustworthy person regarding the time of prayer?

Chapter on Prayer Times

Al-Mughni

Book of Prayer

Book 3 · Issue 2 · Bab 2

Open in Qurani

Primary text

If a trustworthy individual informs one about the time based on knowledge (i.e., not mere opinion), the report must be acted upon, as it is a religious notification, and the statement of a single reliable person is accepted, similar to narration. If the person reports based only on their personal ijtihad (independent legal reasoning), one is not to follow their reasoning but must perform ijtihad for oneself until a strong presumption is reached. This is because one is capable of performing the prayer through their own deduction, so they are not permitted to rely on another's deduction, similar to the situation where the Qibla is uncertain.

Supporting text

If the trustworthy person reports based on their own ijtihad, one must perform their own ijtihad rather than imitating the other's reasoning.
