What is the ruling on interrupting recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha with speech, supplication, or brief silence?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
Recitation of Al-Fatiha is not invalidated by brief silence, supplication, or further recitation, based on the position attributed to Ahmad. If a verse of mercy is encountered, supplication should be made, and if a verse of punishment is encountered, refuge should be sought. However, if the interruption is excessive, recitation must be restarted. Recitation is valid if the silence is commanded, such as when a follower stops to listen to the Imam's recitation and then resumes Al-Fatiha afterward; this is sufficient as indicated by Ahmad.
Supporting text
If the interruption is due to forgetfulness, sleep, or accidentally moving to something else, the recitation is not voided, and the remainder should be completed upon recollection. If one intentionally continues the distraction after remembering, the recitation is voided, requiring a restart. If one intends to stop without actually stopping, the recitation remains valid because action overrides intention. The ruling that intention alone does not void recitation applies even with brief silence accompanied by such intention.
