Primary text

It is forbidden for men to wear silk or clothing woven or plated with gold, and it is forbidden to use these materials for resting upon during prayer or otherwise. The Prophet, peace be upon him, stated: “Silk and gold are forbidden garments for the males of my Ummah and permissible for their females.” There is no known difference of opinion regarding this prohibition for men, except in cases of immediate necessity or excuse; this constitutes a scholarly consensus (Ijmā’).

Supporting text

The ruling concerning prayer in silk or gold-adorned clothing is subject to the same dispute as established for praying in usurped clothing (i.e., validity or invalidity hinges on whether the prohibition invalidates the prayer condition). Resting upon silk or gold is prohibited to the same degree as wearing it, based on the Prophet’s prohibition against drinking, eating, wearing, and sitting on gold and silver vessels and wearing silk and *Dibaj* (brocade).
