What is the ruling on performing obligatory prayer while mounted on an animal?
Chapter on Facing the Qiblah
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
The ruling for performing prayer while mounted on an animal is analogous to the ruling for performing the prayer of fear (Salat al-Khawf). This involves indicating the bowing (ruku') and prostration (sujud) through gestures, with the prostration being lower than the bowing. Jabir narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was seen praying on his mount facing the East, making his prostration lower than his bowing. This ruling applies to praying on a camel, a donkey, or other such animals. Ibn Umar saw the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, praying on a donkey while heading towards Khaybar.
