What is the ruling on performing prostration of forgetfulness (Sujud as-Sahw) when one stands in the place of sitting or sits in the place of standing during prayer?
Chapter on the Two Prostrations of Forgetfulness
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
Prostration of forgetfulness is obligatory for standing in the place of sitting or sitting in the place of standing. This view is held by the majority of scholars, including Ibn Mas'ud, Qatadah, Ath-Thawri, Ash-Shafi'i, Ishaq, and the people of opinion (Ahl ar-Ra'y). The evidence is the Prophet's saying: "If one of you forgets, let him perform two prostrations (Sujud)." and "If a man adds or omits, let him perform two prostrations," as narrated by Muslim. Furthermore, the Prophet said: "For every instance of forgetfulness, there are two prostrations after the greeting (Taslim)." as narrated by Abu Dawud. This is because it constitutes an act of forgetfulness for which prostration is due, similar to other errors.
