What is the ruling on performing the Sadl (letting the ends of the Rida’ hang down without folding them over the shoulder)?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
Performing Sadl is disliked (makruh). This dislike is held by Ibn Mas’ud, An-Nakha’i, Ath-Thawri, Ash-Shafi’i, Mujahid, and ‘Ata. Evidence for its prohibition includes the narration from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet, peace be upon him, forbade Sadl during prayer and covering one's mouth. Furthermore, another narration from Abu Hurayrah explicitly forbade Sadl in prayer.

There is a reported opinion granting concession (Rukhsa) for Sadl from Jabir and Ibn ‘Umar. Some scholars, including Mak’hul, Az-Zuhri, and ‘Ubaidullah bin Al-Hasan bin Al-Husayn, have been reported to perform it. Al-Hasan and Ibn Sirin were reported to perform Sadl over their shirts. Ibn al-Mundhir noted that no firmly established Hadith regarding this exists.
