Primary text

If a person has a staff but cannot plant it firmly in the ground, he should lay it down crosswise (ardhan) before him. This ruling is shared by Sa'id ibn Jubayr and Al-Awza'i. This action is considered analogous to drawing a line, thus standing in its place, based on the established recommendation of drawing a line (khatt) confirmed by the Hadith.
