Primary text

It is impermissible to perform two Witr prayers in one night. Evidence for this is the narration from Qays ibn Talq, who stated that Talq ibn Ali prayed with them, and when the Witr was remaining, he instructed someone to lead the congregation in Witr, saying, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: 'There are not two Witr in one night.'" This hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi, who deemed it Hasan (good).

Supporting text

Concerning one who adopts the position of not breaking the initial Witr, it is narrated from Abu Bakr As-Siddiq that he would sleep, and if he woke up, he would pray even rak'ahs until the morning without establishing a second Witr. Saeed ibn al-Musayyib also practiced this.
