What is the ruling for a pursuer of the enemy regarding the manner of prayer?
Chapter on Facing the Qiblah
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
There is a difference of opinion regarding the student (pursuer) of the enemy who fears their escape. One narration from Abu Abdullah states that he prays according to his current state, similar to the pursued person. This view is held by Al-Awza'i, supported by the narration of Shurahbil ibn Hasana. A second view, held by Ahmad and the majority of scholars, states that the pursuer must perform the prayer of the secure person. This is based on the Quranic verse specifying fear {But if you fear, then [perform it] on foot or mounted} (Quran 2:239), implying that one who is not afraid must perform the prayer of the secure. However, the main argument favors allowing prayer according to the state of the pursuer, citing the action of Abdullah ibn Unays who prayed while gesturing toward the enemy during his mission, suggesting this action was known to be permissible by the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Al-Awza'i adopted the view that the pursuer should pray according to their state, considering it analogous to the fleeing situation as both are circumstances of war, and arguing that the verse’s indication is only about shortening prayers, not the specific restriction during pursuit.
