What is the ruling on raising the hands when descending into prostration?

Chapter on the Description of Prayer

Al-Mughni

Book of Prayer

Book 3 · Issue 3 · Bab 5

Open in Qurani

Primary text

One descends into prostration while reciting the *takbeer* (Allahu Akbar). The descent itself is a pillar and requires a remembrance, similar to other pillars. The *takbeer* begins concurrently with the descent and concludes upon completion of the descent. Raising the hands during the descent into prostration is not recommended according to the predominant view within the school of thought.

Supporting text

A transmission from Al-Maimouni states that raising the hands is done in every lowering and rising movement. This position is supported by narrations concerning Ibn Umar and Abu Humaid. However, the primary position holds that hands are not raised in prostration, supported by the authentic narration of Ibn Umar stating this is not done in prostration, and by Abu Humaid's description of the Prophet's prayer, which omitted mentioning raising hands in prostration.
