Primary text

It is disliked (makruh) for a man to cover his face or mouth during prayer. This is based on the narration from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet, peace be upon him, forbade Sadl in prayer and a man covering his mouth.

Supporting text

There are two differing reports concerning covering the nose (Talaththum): one view states it is disliked because Ibn ‘Umar disliked it. The opposing view states it is not disliked, as the specific prohibition regarding the mouth implies that covering other parts, like the nose, is permissible.
