What is the ruling regarding the listener responding to the call of the Adhan?

Chapter on Adhan

Al-Mughni

Book of Prayer

Book 3 · Issue 4 · Bab 3

Open in Qurani

Primary text

It is recommended for the listener to say what the Mu'adhin says upon hearing the call to prayer. This is based on the narration from Abu Sa'id that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: 'When you hear the call, then say what the Mu'adhin says.' This is narrated by a group including Abu Hurayrah, Amr ibn al-'As and his son, and Umm Habibah.

Supporting text

Other than Al-Kharqi among our companions, it is recommended to say 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (There is no might nor power except with Allah) when the Mu'adhin says 'Hayya 'ala as-Salah' and 'Hayya 'ala al-Falah'. This is based on a narration from Abu Rafi'. Furthermore, a Hadith narrated by Hafs ibn 'Asim from his father from his grandfather (Umar ibn al-Khattab) specifies the exact response for each part of the Adhan, concluding that whoever says it from his heart shall enter Paradise. This latter narration is considered more specific than the Hadith of Abu Sa'id and thus takes precedence or should be reconciled with it.
