Primary text

It is superior to perform voluntary prayer while standing. The Prophet, peace be upon him, stated that whoever prays standing has a greater reward, and whoever prays seated receives half the reward of the standing person. Furthermore, Aisha reported that the Prophet’s prayer became largely seated before his passing. This concession is granted because imposing standing for all voluntary acts would cause many people to abandon them entirely. The Lawgiver showed ease regarding standing, similar to ease granted for praying on a mount during travel or forming the intention for a voluntary fast during the day.

Supporting text

The Prophet, peace be upon him, did not cease praying seated until he grew older, indicating the validity of praying seated, even though standing carries a greater reward. The statement that a man's sitting prayer is half the prayer is also recorded.
