What is the ruling regarding pus, discharge ('sadid'), and matter derived from blood?

Chapter on Praying with Impurity and Other Matters

Al-Mughni

Book of Prayer

Book 3 · Issue 7 · Bab 8

Open in Qurani

Primary text

Pus, discharge, and matter generated from blood are treated similarly to blood. The basis for concession for blood is established due to the narration from Aisha regarding menstrual blood. However, Ahmad stated that discharge is easier to deal with than blood, and Ibn Umar and Al-Hasan did not consider it equivalent to blood. Scholars observed individuals (like Tawus and Mujahid) whose lower garments were stained from sores, and they continued praying without washing until healing. Therefore, more than the amount excused for blood is overlooked for such discharge because it is not explicitly mentioned, and its impurity is derived from its transformation from blood into a repulsive state.

Supporting text

Ahmad considered discharge less severe than blood, while Ibn Umar and Al-Hasan treated it differently from blood. Abu Majlaz stated that the Quran mentioned only flowing blood. Furthermore, scholars observed that what is difficult to avoid, like discharge from sores or boils, should be excused, similar to blood.
