What is the ruling on returning after one has proceeded when a return was not required?

If one returns in a place where proceeding was obligatory, the portion of the rak'ah that was left behind is not considered valid because it was invalidated by beginning the recitation of the subsequent part, and it cannot be corrected afterward.
