What is the ruling for a sighted person in a settled area (Hadar) who prayed facing other than the Ka'bah and later discovers the error?
Chapter on Facing the Qiblah
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
If a sighted person in a settled area prays facing other than the Ka'bah, a repetition (I'adah) of the prayer is obligatory, regardless of whether they prayed based on evidence or without it. This is because the settled area is not a locus for Ijtihad, as one in such an area generally has access to Mihrabs (prayer niches) and established Qiblas, or can usually find someone to provide certain information. Therefore, Ijtihad is not permitted for them, similar to one capable of finding explicit textual proof in other rulings. If they prayed without evidence and erred, repetition is obligatory due to negligence. If they erred after being informed by another, that informer misled them, proving their report was not valid evidence.

If the sighted person is confined (Mahbus) and unable to find someone to inform them, Abu al-Hasan al-Tamimi holds that they are treated like a traveler, performing Ijtihad in their confinement without obligation of repetition, as they are incapable of using reports or Mihrabs for proof. If the sighted person prayed without evidence and was correct, repetition is still due due to dereliction.
