What is the ruling on stopping recitation mid-Surah due to an overwhelming emotional state during prayer?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
It is permissible for the reciter to stop recitation mid-Surah and proceed to Ruku' if overcome by a state such as choking or weeping. This is demonstrated by the action of the Prophet, peace be upon him, who recited Surah Al-Mu'minun, began to choke upon reaching the mention of 'Isa (Jesus), and then bowed.
