Primary text

If a man ties the middle of his garment (Shadd al-Wasat) while praying using a belt, an Izaar, a piece of cloth, or the tie of a Qabā’ garment, it is not disliked, according to a single narration. Ahmad permitted this practice, citing that Ibn ‘Umar did so when tying his garment with a handkerchief over his shirt.

If the tying is done with a thread or rope around or above the navel, there are two differing reports. One view states it is disliked because it resembles the People of the Book, against whom the Prophet, peace be upon him, warned. The other view, stated by Ahmad, permits it, based on the Hadith, “None of you should pray except while being firmly tied (Muhtazim),” which is interpreted as tying around the waist.
