What is the ruling on wearing garments bearing images of living beings?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
The wearing of garments bearing images of animals is disliked (makruh) according to Ibn Aqil. The prohibition upon entry of angels into a house containing an image or a dog is cited as evidence by those who deem wearing such garments as forbidden, based on the narration from Abu Talha that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say, "The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture," which is agreed upon (Muttafaq 'alayh).
Supporting text
The view that it is not forbidden is supported by the narration from Zayd ibn Khalid who narrated from Abu Talha from the Prophet (peace be upon him), concluding with the exception, "except for figures embroidered on a garment" (illa ruqman fi thawb), which is agreed upon. The justification is that if such images are permissible when spread out or leaned upon, they are similarly permissible when worn.
