Primary text

Seeking refuge (*Ta'awwudh*) is a Sunnah of the prayer, supported by the Quranic command: 'When you recite the Quran, seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan' (Quran 16:98). The most authenticated hadith in this matter indicates the Prophet (peace be upon him) said after commencing the prayer: 'O Allah, place a barrier between me and my sins as far as You have placed a barrier between the East and the West...'

Malik held that seeking refuge is not legislated based on a narration from Anas. However, the primary evidence of the Quranic command and the established hadith regarding the Prophet's practice override this.
