Primary text

Abu Hanifa stated that if the uncovered area of the 'Mughallaza' is the size of a dirham (coin), or if the uncovered area of the 'Mukhaffafa' is less than one-fourth of it, the prayer is not invalidated. If it exceeds these amounts, the prayer is invalidated.

The correct position is that since the Sharia has not provided a specific measure for this, the ruling must revert to custom ('urf), similar to the rulings concerning the excessive amount of actions, separation, or possession within prayer. Establishing a fixed measure without textual evidence is not permissible.
