Is standing a requirement for pronouncing the call to prayer (Adhan)?
Chapter on Adhan
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
It is the Sunnah (established practice) for the Mu'adhin (caller) to stand while pronouncing the Adhan. Ibn al-Mundhir reported consensus among the scholars he knew that this is the established practice. The evidence for this is the Hadith where the Prophet, peace be upon him, commanded Bilal, 'Stand up and announce the call (Adhan).' The Mu'adhins of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, used to perform the Adhan while standing.

If the caller has a valid excuse, it is permissible for him to pronounce the Adhan while sitting. Al-Hasan al-'Abdi stated that he saw Abu Zayd, a companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, who had an injury to his leg sustained in Allah's cause, announcing the Adhan while sitting.
