What is sufficient for someone praying alone in their home in the city?
Chapter on Adhan
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
For one praying in their house within the city, the Adhan of the city suffices. This is the position held by Ahmad, Al-Aswad, Abu Mijlaz, Mujahid, Al-Sha'bi, Al-Nakha'i, 'Ikrimah, and the People of Opinion (Ahl al-Ra'y).

Miymun ibn Mihran, Al-Awza'i, and Malik hold that the Iqamah (second call) is sufficient. Al-Hasan and Ibn Sirin permitted either the Adhan or the Iqamah. Their evidence is the instruction given by the Prophet, peace be upon him, to the one he taught prayer: 'When you intend to pray, perfect your ablution, then face the Qibla and say Takbir,' without commanding the Adhan. Another narration states, 'Then establish the Iqamah, then say Takbir.' The Hadith of Ibn Mas'ud also supports this.
