What supplication is recommended during the Witr prayer Qunut?
Chapter on the Times When Prayer is Prohibited
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
It is recommended to recite the supplication taught by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) to Al-Hasan ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both). This supplication is: 'O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, grant me well-being among those You have granted well-being, take charge of me among those You have taken charge of, bless me in what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. Indeed, You decree and none decrees over You, and indeed, he whom You take as a guardian is not humiliated, and he whom You oppose is not honored. Blessed are You, our Lord, and exalted.' This narration is found in Abu Dawud and Al-Tirmidhi, who deemed it a Hasan hadith, stating nothing better regarding Qunut is known from the Prophet (peace be upon him).
Supporting text
It is also permissible to recite what Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated concerning the Prophet's (peace be upon him) recitation in his Witr prayer, though the specific wording is not reiterated here. Furthermore, the supplication narrated from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) recited during Fajr prayer is also mentioned as relevant for recitation: 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, we seek Your aid and ask for Your guidance, seek Your forgiveness, believe in You, place our trust in You, praise You with all goodness, thank You, and do not disbelieve in You. O Allah, it is You we worship, for You we pray and prostrate, to You we strive and hasten, we hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment, for surely Your true punishment befalls the disbelievers. O Allah, punish the disbelieving People of the Book who bar others from Your path.'
