Ibn Aqil stated that one must commence the utterance 'As-salamu alaykum' towards the Qibla. Subsequently, one turns while saying 'wa rahmatullah' (and the mercy of Allah) to the right and the left. The phrase 'wa rahmatullah' is uttered during the act of turning, based on the statement of Aisha that the Prophet, peace be upon him, used to offer the salutation directly facing forward. This means the initial part of the greeting faces forward, and the 'wa rahmatullah' component occurs during the turning.
