If there is no concern for causing grief, is it better to aim for a farther or nearer mosque when the number of worshippers is equal?
Chapter on Imamate and Congregational Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
There are two narrations concerning whether it is preferable to attend the farther or the nearer mosque when other factors are equal. One narration states that attending the farther mosque is preferable so that one’s steps for reward are multiplied, thus increasing their good deeds. The second narration states that attending the nearer mosque is preferable due to the right of neighborhood (*jiwar*), as a neighbor is more entitled to one's prayer just as a neighbor is more entitled to their neighbor's gift and favor than a distant person.
