Is there a shared interval between the end of Dhuhr and the beginning of Asr time?
Chapter on Prayer Times
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
Ishaq and Ibn al-Mubarak asserted that the end of Dhuhr and the beginning of Asr time overlap by the duration required to perform one Rak'ah (unit of prayer). If two men perform Dhuhr and Asr simultaneously when the shadow equals the object's height, both are considered to be praying within their respective times. This is based on the Prophet's statement to Ibn Abbas that he prayed Dhuhr at the time designated for Asr the previous day.

The position of the majority, based on Jibreel's actions and Quran 11:114, does not negate this shared interval. The phrase 'time of Asr' in the preceding Hadith refers to the proximity of the time, meaning the start of the Asr prayer today connects with the end of the Dhuhr prayer yesterday. The end of the time is determined by completion, as evidenced by the Prophet's statement: 'The time of Dhuhr is until the time of Asr enters' (Muslim, Abu Dawud).
