What types of prayers should be included when making up numerous missed obligatory prayers?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
One must limit the making up (Qada) only to the obligatory prayers. Sunnah or optional prayers should not be offered in between these makeup prayers. This is established because when the Prophet (peace be upon him) missed four prayers on the Day of the Trench, he ordered Bilal to call the Iqamah sequentially for Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha, without mentioning any Sunnah prayers being offered in between. The obligatory prayer takes precedence due to its greater importance.
Supporting text
If the number of missed prayers is small (Yaseer), there is no objection to making up the regular associated Sunnah prayers (Rawatib). This is supported by the precedent that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) missed the Fajr prayer, he made up its Sunnah prayer beforehand.
