How should the urine of a male infant who has not yet begun eating solid food be purified?
Chapter on Praying with Impurity and Other Matters

Book of Prayer
Primary text
The urine of a male infant who has not yet tasted solid food requires merely sprinkling water (*nash*) upon it until it is saturated, without the need for scrubbing or heavy washing. The urine of a female infant requires washing. This is the view of Ali, Ata, Al-Hasan, Al-Shafi'i, and Ishaq. The evidence is based on the authentic hadiths where the Prophet (peace be upon him) sprinkled water on the garment soiled by the infant boy's urine without washing it, while purification of the female infant's urine necessitated washing.

Al-Thawri and Abu Hanifa held that the urine of a male infant must be washed just as a female infant's urine is washed, arguing that since it is impure urine, it necessitates washing like all other impure urines, and a ruling related to impurity should not differentiate between male and female.
