Primary text

It is recommended (*mustahabb*) to perform voluntary prayers similar to the voluntary prayers of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would pray two rak'ahs after Fajr prayer once the sun had risen to the height equivalent to the time between Dhuhr and Asr prayers from the West (afternoon). He would then pause until the sun reached the height equivalent to the Dhuhr prayer time from the East, at which point he would pray four rak'ahs. Furthermore, he prayed four rak'ahs before Dhuhr when the sun passed its zenith, and two rak'ahs after it, and four rak'ahs before Asr. He separated every two rak'ahs with the greeting (salam) upon the near angels, the prophets, and those who followed them among the Muslims. These total sixteen voluntary rak'ahs performed by the Prophet during the day, and few adhere to them consistently.
