Is ablution required if one loses the location of one's water supply and then finds it?
Chapter on Tayammum
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
If a person loses the location of their water supply (such as their baggage containing water, or a known well) and subsequently finds it, ablution is not required upon finding it. This is the correct opinion, held by Al-Shafi'i. The evidence is derived from the general ruling that one who does not find water must perform Tayammum, as stated in the verse: {If you cannot find water, then proceed to clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands with it} [Al-Ma'idah: 6]. Since the person was not in actual possession of the water, they fall under this ruling. Furthermore, the person was not negligent in causing the absence of water.

Ibn 'Aqil suggested that this case could be treated similarly to the case of one who forgets, implying that redoing the prayer might be necessitated.
