What acts become permissible with ablution (Tayammum) if the intention (Niyyah) is for a required (Fard) prayer?
Chapter on Tayammum
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
If a person intends Tayammum for a Fard prayer, they are permitted to perform any act permissible by Tayammum, both before and after the Fard prayer. This includes performing voluntary (Nawafil) prayers, reading the Quran, touching the Mushaf (Quran copy), and remaining in the mosque. This view is held by Al-Shafi'i and the proponents of the school of thought of Al-Ra'y (Hanafi school). The evidence is based on the principle that since the voluntary act is permitted by the ritual purity required for the Fard, it becomes permissible upon intending the Fard, similar to the established Sunan Ratibah (regular voluntary prayers) and acts performed after the Fard.

Imam Malik stated that one cannot perform voluntary prayers, except for the regular Sunan, before the Fard prayer. A similar view is narrated from Imam Ahmad, based on the argument that the voluntary act is subordinate to the Fard, and thus the subordinate cannot precede the principal. They counter this by stating that while the voluntary act is subordinate in *sanctioning* the act, it is not subordinate in *execution*, similar to the Sunan Ratibah and Quran recitation.
