Open in Qurani

Primary text

Tayammum is permissible for all acts requiring ritual purity, including supererogatory prayers (nafl), touching the Mushaf (Quran copy), reading the Quran, prostration of recitation (Sujud al-Tilawah), prostration of gratitude (Sujud al-Shukr), remaining within a mosque, and reading portions of the Quran for a person in a state of major ritual impurity (Janaabah). This view is held by Ahmad, 'Ata, Makhul, al-Zuhri, Rabi'ah, Yahya al-Ansari, Malik, al-Shafi'i, al-Thawri, and the People of Opinion (Ashab al-Ra'y). The evidence relies upon the Prophet's saying, 'The pure earth is purification for the Muslim, even if he does not find water for ten years,' and his statement, 'The earth has been made for me a mosque and a means of purification.' Furthermore, anything permissible via water purification is permissible via Tayammum, just as the obligatory prayer is.
