Is another ritual bath (Ghusl) required if semen exits after an initial ritual bath following ejaculation or sexual intercourse?
Chapter on What Necessitates Ghusl
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
The predominant view attributed to Ahmad is that no further Ghusl is required. Narrations regarding Abu Abdullah (Ahmad) confirm that only ablution (Wudu) is incumbent, whether urination occurs or not. This position is supported by Ali, Ibn Abbas, Ata, Al-Zuhri, Malik, Al-Layth, Al-Thawri, and Ishaq. The core argument supporting the view that no Ghusl is due in this situation is derived from the principle established by Imam Ahmad regarding subsequent ejaculation after a full Ghusl following initial intercourse or ejaculation: since one act of major impurity (Janabah) only necessitates one Ghusl, a second Ghusl is not incumbent for the remnant fluid.

A dissenting opinion suggests that Ghusl is required only if the semen exits with lust and ejaculation (Shahwah), as stated by Sa'id ibn Jubayr. Another view, attributed to Al-Awza'i, Abu Hanifa, and Al-Hasan, states that if the remnant semen exits after urination, no Ghusl is required, but if it exits before urination, Ghusl is required. This distinction is based on the fluid exiting with the sensation of ejaculation and lust, thus resembling the initial discharge, whereas post-urination fluid is considered a remnant not necessarily belonging to the initial discharge.
